We ended up at the French Riviera because of an email. Easyjet had holiday deals. Mostly they were to places further north, in Scotland, but I’m not much for the cold. The only other options were Pisa and Cannes. I thought I’d seen Milan in the list, but that must have sold out.

We were very close to going to Pisa until we looked up the hotel. It was by the airport, but very, very far from town. We used Google Earth to see if we could walk to town, but the walk was along deserted roads and expansive fields.

It was like the decision was made for us. We would go to Cannes.

I was a film nerd for many years as a teenager and in my early twenties, and I was in love with the idea of film festivals, even if I never went to one. The Cannes Film Festival was something I knew about, but looking back, I realize I didn’t know that much about it. I just liked its existence. I liked red carpets and palm trees and blue water.
