If you’ve been paying attention to my “Current watch” section at the end of my newsletters, you’ve noticed that I have a soft spot for real estate and home renovation shows. Actually, you might have already known this from Clean Air, where my protagonist, Izabel, likes Property Brothers.
Recently I found that HGTV has 10-minute versions of many of their 44-minute shows on YouTube. I think I’ve watched every single one that they’ve uploaded at this point. (The only ones I avoid are of Love It or List It, because they don’t reveal if the owners chose to love it or list it!)
Once I exhausted HGTV’s YouTube channel (and HGTV UK’s, too, if I’m being honest), I discovered a ton of House Hunters and House Hunters International full episodes posted on YouTube. And Escape to the Country. And probably more that I have yet to discover.
So why am I talking about this? Because sometimes on these shows, the client is a writer! I’m always fascinated by what they say they are looking for in their homes. Some are looking for good views. Some are looking to live in the hometowns of their favorite authors. Almost everyone is looking for a room that can exclusively be a writing space.
I like to imagine what it would be like to move somewhere with enough money that I can have anything I want. Would I want a room for writing? Would I derive pleasure from a view of the sea? A view of a city skyline? Would I write more? Would I write different things?
